Veteran Ceramicist William Brouillard Brings New Work to Rocky River's River Gallery

Sat 6/13 @ 3-6PM

Artist William Brouillard studied ceramics in Wisconsin (where he is from), New York and North Carolina and taught in Tennessee and North Carolina before landing a teaching job at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1980. He taught there for 36 years while maintaining a studio in Tremont, where he was influenced by the nearby industrial plants and steel mills. He won the Cleveland Arts Prize for lifetime achievement in 2009. Now in his 70s, he continues to turn out work in his studio.

And he continues to show his work. His next show, called Polyvalent: Works by William Brouillard, will take place at the River Gallery in Rocky River. The gallery says of the show, “Spanning functional pottery, sculptural forms, and mixed-material investigations, the exhibition reflects an artist whose practice resists singular categorization and instead embraces multiplicity, process, and place. Rooted in clay but extending into wood and other studio materials, Brouillard’s practice is intentionally wide-ranging. While he produces functional stoneware and porcelain tableware grounded in traditional ceramic practice, he also develops more experimental works that draw from industrial forms, local histories, and the visual language of his Cleveland surroundings.”

The show opens with a free public reception on Saturday June 13, and will be on view through Saturday August 1.
