The nonprofit ENCORE Chamber Music Institute was founded in 2015 by violinist Jinjoo Cho, a frequent performer on local stages, to present the ENCORE Summer Academy to give pre-professional classical musicians from around the globe the chance to train with internationally noted musicians, and to present a series of public concerts and community performances in Northeast Ohio, featuring world-class chamber musicians and performing artists; paired with community outreach performances throughout Northeast Ohio. This year’s festival began on June 5 and wraps up this week with a concert at the Gates Mills Community House.
The theme of this year’s summer session is “Home,” and the final concert is called “NEXT GEN: Our Home at ENCORE.” It features a collaboration between the summer academy’s students and faculty as the young musicians play alongside their teachers. The program includes John Rutter’s Suite for Strings; Carl Reinecke’s Serenade for Strings; Benjamin Britten’s Prelude and Fugue for 18-part string orchestra; and 35-year-old composer/multi-instrumentalist Shelley Washington’s SAY, which features a lively, discordant vocal chant.
