Once again, lantern makers have been busy preparing for Canalway’s annual Towpath Train Lantern Parade, a sort of low-key “greet the spring” event taking place on the edge of Tremont overlooking the Cuyahoga River. It focuses on the season’s growing light (later that night daylight savings kicks in, but the parade takes place as the light is dwindling), on sustainability and protection of our natural assets, and on the creative talents everyone possesses.
The parade will be led by five area artists/artist collectives who have been working to create spectacular lanterns, honoring the people, the history, and the economy of the river (and even the spotted salamander, Ohio’s state amphibian, which lives in the wetlands along the canalway corridor). But anyone of any age or artistic experience can make a lantern and join in. Lanterns should be made from recycled materials and be battery-operated. The comfortable, 1.5 mile stroll along the Towpath Trail begins and ends at Sokolowski’s Overlook. There’s plenty of free parking right across the street.
