Cuyahoga River Symposium Explores Ways to Protect Our Water Assets

Thu 3/12 @ 9:30AM-3PM

If the state of our natural resources, especially clean water, is an issue you’re passionate about, you might want to consider taking a day to attend the 2026 Cuyahoga River AOC (area of concern) symposium #StoriesThatFlow, taking place at the National Slovenian Home on St. Clair.

You can meet others that share your passion, hear from experts and learn what you can do next to assure that our water sources are unpolluted. Jessica Jock from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe/St. Lawrence AOC will share how toxic waste contamination in animals is threatening survival of indigenous culture. Author Barry Wittenstein, author of The Day the River Caught Fire: How the Cuyahoga River Exploded and Ignited the Earth Day Movement, and its illustrator Jessie Hartland, will be featured in a panel talking about the unexpectedly positive fallout of the famous 1969 Cuyahoga River fire, and will do a book signing. Representatives from the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership, Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will talk about water protection on the east side, and a resident archeologist from Summit Metro Parks will share the history of its Gorge Metro Park.

And the event will celebration the awarding of the 2025 Champion of the River to Cleveland State University associate professor of biological, geological and environmental science Dr. Julie Wolin, whose research looks at the effects of human activity on freshwater and wetland ecosystems.

Registration is just $5 which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. And it’s followed by a happy hour hangout at Goldhorn Brewery to socialize with like-minded people. Get tickets here.
