You’re stir crazy on a Monday and where are you going to go? There’s a place you can visit 363 days a year — every day but Christmas and New Year’s Day. Rockefeller Park Greenhouse and Botanical Garden is tucked away up a short driveway between the Albanian and Armenia gardens, off MLK Boulevard just south of the train bridge and the route 90 overpass. It’s just a stone’s throw from MLK and many people who drive that way all the time have no idea it’s the there.
There’s a parking lot right in front, and both parking and admission are always free. Walk inside and you’ll be met with a blast of tropical warmth. Some of the displays are seasonal — lilies for Easter, poinsettias for Christmas, mums for fall. But you can take in the cacti and succulents and tropical plants such as the Bird of Paradise anytime. There are benches to sit and relax — or read or sketch. Come back in the spring to visit outdoor areas such as the Willott Iris Garden or the sound garden designed for the hearing impaired with its emphasis on sound and scent. But go now to soak in the rejuvenating aromas of growing things.
