The Cleveland Orchestra Plays Mozart’s Final Symphony

The Cleveland Orchestra Plays Mozart's Final Symphony

Thu 1/8-Sat 1/10 @ 7:30PM

The last symphony Mozart wrote before he died in 1791 at the age of 35 was his Symphony No. 42, dubbed “Jupiter,” one of three he wrote in 1788. It was his longest symphony, and it’s remained one of his most popular, although pretty much any Mozart on a concert program guarantees audience satisfaction.

This week the Cleveland Orchestra, under the baton of music director Franz Welser-Möst, will be playing the piece. It’s pairs with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 aka The Year 1905, which was written by the Russian composer in 1957 and debuted that same year in Moscow. (The title refers to the first Russian Revolution, which preceded the bloody revolution of 1917, which overthrew the tsar and installed Communist rule. It occurred the year before Shostakovich’s birth.)

The concerts include a pre-concert talk by Baldwin Wallace Professor of Musicology Emeritus Michael Strasser in Reinberger Chamber Hall an hour before performance time. In addition, patrons can also buy a ticket to a wine tasting in the lounge prior to the concert.
