Northeast Ohio-based Duo Balalaika, formerly the Russian Duo, has been playing around this area for nearly 20 years. So fans of Eastern European-based folk music know American pianist Terry Boyarsky (who is of Russian descent) and Siberian balalaika player/pianist Oleg Kruglyakov. Each had built their own career, with Boyarsky performing and teaching movement, dance, piano, and vocal music, and Kruglyakov playing with numerous touring Russian folk groups before moving here in 1998. They joined forces in 2007 to play a variety of Russian classical and folk music, incorporating everything from traditional peasant tunes to classical music to tangos. And they share stories behind the music as well.
The duo will be performing for a Mechanic Street House Concert, an irregular series of events taking place in Joel and Lynn’s living room in a century home in Ohio City. Obviously, these concerts are pretty intimate, and Joel and Lynn even provide snacks. There’s a suggested donation of $25, all of which goes to the musicians. All you have to do to get in is RSVP via email at team@mechanicstreetmusic.com to reserve your seat.
