Sat 12/6 @ 6:30PM
From 2012-2017 Cleveland’s Sistah Sinema, which focused on queer women of color, offered these women the chance to get together to watch movies that spoke to their interests, talk about them, have something to and enjoy some camaraderie.
It’s been a while, but now founding director Deidre McPherson is getting things going again with a screening of Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, taking place at the Midtown TechHive. The 2024 Canadian documentary explores the life and career of transgender vocalist Jackie Shane, who was part of the Toronto music scene in the 1960s, before disappearing from the stage in 1971. While director Michael Mabbott did phone interviews with Shane before her death in 2019, little footage of her performances exists so they were recreated by animation.
The evening starts at 6:30 when the doors open and attendees are invited to get a plate of food provided by Pearl’s Kitchen. At 7pm there’s a welcome and some opening words, followed at 7:15 by the 99-minute film. At 8:55, there’s “a moment of reflection together” with a community conversation about the film and guest speakers at 9 and music (a Jackie Shane-inspired playlist), food and socializing at 9:35. Cocktails will be available as well. The evening lasts until 10:30pm.
