Sun 12/28 @ 5:45PM
Unsilent Night started in New York’s Greenwich Village in 1992 when composer/sound artist Phil Kline, a native of the Akron area, wrote a piece of music to be played simultaneously by multiple people in the streets of Greenwich Village, where he’s based. Each participant got an Mp3 (!), CD (!!) or cassette (!!!) of one of four pieces of music, to be played on a boombox (!!!!!!!) while walking around a selected space to create a “mobile sound sculpture.” The event now takes place in more than 170 cities on five continents, attracting thousands of participants in some locations, with the same basic format except now instead of a cassette and a boombox, participants bring a smartphone and a Bluetooth speaker.
Cleveland held its version of Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night in mid-December, and there was another scheduled for Kent on Sunday December 14. However, the cold and wind chill nixed that event, and it’s been rescheduled for Sunday 12/28. Meet at 4:45 at the Hometown Bank Plaza downtown for free hot cocoa and light-up sticks. The walk steps off at 6:15. Participants are invited to dress festively! Those who don’t want to walk can listen in on speakers set up at Hometown Bank Plaza.
The event is free and open to all.
