Two African-American Classical Guitarists, Duo Noire, Perform Repertoire Standards and World Premieres

Sat 11/15 @ 7:30PM

The two young African-American classical guitarists who comprise Duo Noire, both graduates of. the Yale School of music, each has a thriving career of his own as a performer and educator — Christopher Mallett in the San Francisco Bay area, Thomas Flippin (who is also a composer) in the New York/New England area.

Together as Duo Noire for more than a decade, they focus primarily on contemporary music, much of which they commission. When they perform in Cleveland for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s international series, they’ll mix pieces by composers born in the 1980s and 90s with music by J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Astor Piazzolla, and a pair of under-recognized Black composers they’ve championed: guitarist/composer/educator/civil rights activist Justin Holland (1819-1887) and Canadian-American composer/pianist/organist Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943). They’ll be performing a pair of world premieres too: “Bound and Undone” by 35-year-old French-Lebanese violinist Layale Chaker, and “Lengua Quebrada” by Colombian/Cuban/American musician Bryan Senti who now lives in Italy.

The concert takes place at the Maltz Performing Arts Center in University Circle. Get tickets here.
