By any measure the media preview of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s next big special show, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami’s Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow, was an unusual event. Billed as a “media and influencer” preview, it was clear that many attendees were there to show themselves off, dressed in outfits more typically found in nightclubs than in the morning at an art museum. It wasn’t the usual sober crowd. That was clear in the way many gravitated toward the versatile artist’s most colorful and cartoonish works, as opposed to the ones showing his reverence for Japanese history and historical artifacts. Media presence was heavy; there were lots of colorful things to film.
The artist himself appeared at the event, but didn’t address the crowd, instead posing for photos with a stream of people who lined up to do so. The show is on view May 25-September 7.
