Every year, Standing Rock Cultural Arts in Kent has hosted its annual environmental’ “Who’s Your Mama” Earth Day Festival, now in its 19th year. It culminates with the festival on April 19, but it has a couple of events leading up to it, one taking place this week when SRCA opens its 25th Annual Environmental Art Exhibit this weekend.
This year it’ll feature the work of a single artist, painter Chuck Slonaker who will be displaying a series called In Defense of Evolution.
“Evolution is real and calling it just a theory is disingenuous,” says Sloanker. The recent attacks on science and higher learning are foolhardy and dangerous for the young tender minds of our children. My artwork is not so much decorative as it is illustrative and informative. Hopefully my pictures and words will spark some honest debate about the origin of our species.
The show opens with a reception at Standing Rock’s North Water Street Gallery on Saturday April 4 @ 7-9pm. It’ll feature music by Jen Maurer of Mo’Mojo “and friends.” It’s free and open to all.
