Currently underway, Cleveland Public Theatre’s Test Flight program is its “in development” series, giving playwrights a chance to take new work out for a spin and see how it looks on an actual stage.
Week 2 features a new work by a new playwright who has been getting her feet wet in the local theater scene since 2017. Samanatha Cocco has appeared on the CPT stage, as well as at convergence-continuum and Karamu, and is slated to perform this spring at Ensemble Theatre in The Prospect of Equality. But as a playwright, she’s just getting started. Her first work, Temptation of Adam, was performed as a 15-minute piece at CPT’s annual Pandemonium benefit last September and now an expanded version will be onstage this weekend.
The synopsis of the piece reveals a doomsday scenario with a personal spin as people move into bunkers as World War 3 begins.
“In one such bunker we find Adam, a nuclear scientist given a grave responsibility; his loyal friend Danny, grappling with his family’s health; and Marie, the strong-willed object of Adam’s affection. While Danny and Marie worry about the survival of their loved ones and the world, Adam’s trepidation lies with whether his budding relationship with Marie would survive above ground. Temptation of Adam examines the toll that isolation takes on our lives and relationships and what we might do when desperate for love and human connection.”
Mike Frye, who has performed at many area theaters, including convergence-continuum, the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, and as a children’s performer and comedian, makes his debut as a director for this production.
Temptation of Adam will have three performances from Thursday March 14-Saturday March 16. All CPT shows are pay what you wish.
