Northeast Ohio Art Spaces Lighten Up January with New Shows

From Brianna L. Hernandez’s “Anticipatory|Después”

Fri 1/12

Get set for a glut of new art appearing on the walls of galleries all around northeast Ohio this Friday.

Summit Artspace in downtown Akron opens its winter shows from 5-8pm with yet another five diverse exhibitions. They include the 20th annual FRESH juried exhibition, showcasing creators who push the boundaries of art. This year’s juror was Pita Brooks, executive director of Akron Soul Train. In Bad Nostalgia, Katherine Strobel’s watercolors focus on the ephemeral quality of memory. And artist David Kruk’s Nobody’s Here is all about “lost futures” and “cultural stagnation.” Rounding out the schedule are two group shows: the Waffle Weave Invitational and Taking Care of Our House, featuring work by local students, teachers and school leaders. The shows are on view through March 16.

At Heights Arts in Cleveland Heights, a reception from 5-8pm introduces a new group show called Prismatic.  It features five artists who work in different mediums, united by some similarities in approach to color and abstraction. They include painter Patricia Zinsmeister Parker, encaustic artist Sue Kirchner, glassworker Marianne Hite, Cherie Lesnick who works on paper, and Hope Hickman. In addition, in its smaller spotlight gallery, you can see work by Amelia C. Joynes, who mixes traditional media, glass, fiber, metal and print to reflect on nature through abstraction.

And finally, three new shows will take over the galleries at SPACES, with a reception from 6-9pm. A Botanical Conversation by Franco-Moroccan artist Mehdi-Georges Lahlou “explores issues of identity, diversity, and contemporary societal challenges” and “ruminates on the relationship between humans and their environment, underscoring historical and cultural influences.” The show also features work he created during a recent residency at SPACES.

Chicana death doula Brianna L. Hernandez’s Anticipatory|Después is series of video and sculptural installations exploring themes of end-of-life care, grief and mourning. Finally, Escaping the Aawful Land, an installation in the Vault coordinated by Aaron D. William builds on his previous show Aawful Friends at Zygote Press. In it, he and his collaborating artists explore the impacts of anxiety and ways of addressing it. You can see the SPACES shows through  March 1.
