Twelve area drag artists gave stunning performances at the Beachland Ballroom as part of the annual Cleveland Drag Showcase, demonstrating the range and creativity of drag performance. They showed that it’s not just about lip synching in fabulous wigs and spectacular gowns, although there were some such knockout performances. But others were about horror, humor, entertaining story lines and even political statements. Diversity was on display at this event. And the costumes WERE spectacular although they did always adhere to the classic definition of glamor.
Performers included show organizer Veranda L’Ni (aka Cleveland’s tallest drag queen), Dr. Lady J, Onya Nurve, Anhedonia Delight, Macho Grande, Agata Why, Sassy Sascha, Vivien Vendetta-Sinclaire, Alexis Milan, Malibu Peruu, Dusty Bucket and Stevie Phoenix. Most perform regularly around town. Veranda does monthly drag bingo shows at the Music Box while Anhedonia organizes monthly GlamGore shows at the Grog Show. While primarily 18-and-over venues, they are not the “adult cabarets” the state legislature wants to limit drag shows to, an effort to destroy the drag scene in Ohio.
