It’s time once again to salute the incredible longevity of Cleveland Heights music venue the Grog Shop, which has been presenting up-and-coming indie bands as well as iconic acts, for 31 year, first at its location at the corner of Mayfield and Coventry roads and now at a larger and more comfortable spot (with bathrooms you’re not disgusted to go into! And air conditioning!) in the heart of Coventry. In some weeks, dozens of acts will play at the Grog and its downstairs partner venue the B-Side Lounge, with concerts every night of the week. So here’s to owner Kathy Blackmon, who started the club with two partners but eventually became the sole surviving owner.
The club is celebrating with four nights of shows from Thursday September 1 through Sunday September 24. A lucky 13 bands will be playing over those nights including on Saturday, ’90s heavy New York underground rockers Helmet, anchored by guitarist/vocalist Page Hamilton whose 1994 album Betty briefly put them on the mainstream radar. On Friday you can catch the Monday Program, a collaborative project spearheaded by well-known local musician/DJ/producer Corey Grand.
