It’s Mahler week in northeast Ohio. While the Akron Symphony will be deploying major musical firepower on the composer’s Symphony No. 3 (Pastoral”) the Cleveland Orchestra will be regaling its audiences with Symphony No. 1 (“Titan”).
It too is pretty grandiose. Mahler wrote, “A symphony should be like the world, it should embrace everything,” the orchestra tells us. “From its opening whispers of dawn and birdsong to its grand and glorious finale, Mahler’s symphony is turbulent, passionate, triumphant … and simply exhilarating,” they say.
For appetizers, they’ll present two pieces by Claude Debussy: Jeux (Games), poème dansé and his Fantasie for Piano and Orchestra, with Leif Ove Andsnes on piano. The legendary Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the program.
