27-Year-Old Finnish Conductor Leads Cleveland Orchestra in “Bolero” & More

Thu 2/2 @ 7:30PM

Fri 2/3 @ 7:20PM

Sat 2/4 @ 8PM

Sun 2/5 @ 3PM

The Cleveland Orchestra’s concerts this week will be led by 27-year-old Finnish musician Klaus Mäkelä, a young man on a fast rise in the conducting world. He’s currently chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, music director of Orchestra de Paris and artistic partner of the famed Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, where he’s slated to move up to Chief Conductor in 2027. Needless to say, such precocity is at least partly driven by his background: he’s the son of two classical musicians.

He’ll conduct a program that includes Maurice Ravel’s very familiar Boléro and Claude Debussy’s Images.  It will also include the Cleveland Orchesta premiere of 43-year-old American composer Andrew Norman’s 2018 composition Sustain, which replaces Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Cello Concerto since scheduled soloist Truls Mørk suffered a muscle injury.
