Bike Cleveland Remembers Victims of Traffic Violence on Public Square

Sun 11/20 @ 5-6PM

The nonprofit Bike Cleveland’s main mission is working to create safer streets, designed for everyone — walkers and bikers, and not just cars. One of the ways they call attention to the urgency of their mission is by joining with global communities for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims with an event, taking place at Public Square.

World Day of Remembrance points out the number of largely preventable injuries and deaths caused by car accidents, especially among younger people.

“Our rallying cry is “Safe Streets Save Lives,” they say. “That’s because we know that if we design our streets and sidewalks to be safe for walkers and bicyclists, they will be safer for everyone. But too often, our public right-of-ways lack essential elements for safety: sidewalks, crosswalks, street lighting, not to mention traffic calming measures that can reduce speed like narrowed crossings and bike lanes.”

All are welcome at the event, which honors the 1.35 million people killed on the highway each year. Starting at 5pm, there’ll be testimony from victims, statements from city officials and a closing statement from Bike Cleveland executive director Jacob VanSickle, with candles placed onstage to honor the people killed and injured in Cleveland in the last year, and flowers honoring those lost across the country.

At sunset, Terminal Tower will be lit yellow to support the need to reduce traffic violence.
