Who would’ve guessed that Cleveland’s Mushroomhead, formed in 1993 by drummer Steve “Skinny “Felton and some of his heavy metal buddies as a side project, would last this long?
Initially it donned anonymous jumpsuits and outré masks in order to not distract from its “serious” bands — which are all long gone. Since then it’s become their identity, and they’ve change their costumes and looks over the years, always with a bit of a macabre twist. They’ve survived countless personnel changes original singer Jason Popson returned to the group in 2014 after a decade’s absence) and the pandemic, which found them releasing their latest album, A Wonderful Life, once again showing off their musically polyglot heavy sound which incorporates metal, industrial, goth, punk, ambient and electronic music.
So it’s no wonder that their Halloween shows have become a local staple, and they’re doing one this year once again at the Agora Theatre. Half Raised Heathens and Bittersweet Revenge open two more of a parade of opening acts that Mushroomhead will probably outlive. Go here for tickets.
