Amba started out during the pandemic as one of Chef Doug Katz’s two “ghost kitchens,” run out of his diner/catering location in Cleveland Heights. While the other, Chimi, served food with a South American spin, Amba partook of the flavors of India.
Since then, Katz has closed his original eatery, fire food and drink, at Shaker Square, and reopened the Mediterranean-flavored Zhug in Cleveland Heights. And in late spring 2022, Amba opened in Ohio City’s Hingetown as a brick-and-mortar restaurant. It features a main dining area and a space called Bar Amba, featuring classic and specialty cocktails.
As at Zhug, the menu features a long list of shareable, small plate items, both meat-based and vegetarian, such as smashed pea samosas, Turkish fried eggs with yogurt, lentil donuts and Herb-grilled chicken — more than two dozen in all to mix and match for a flavorful meal. Cocktails, wine & beer are also available in the dining room. As at Zhug, it’s strictly walk-in — no reservations are taken.
