Akron Performance Tells the Story of Bhutanese Refugees

Fri 7/22-Sun 8/14

Akron-based Gum-Dip Theatre is a company that does non-traditional performances that mostly tell stories about marginalized people, including refugees. Their upcoming production, Three Countries, One Mother, is a solo performance that tells one such story.

Lead artist NimBrother (Neema Bal) uses storytelling, movement, poetry and song to share his own story of the displacement of his Bhutanese-Nepali family during the Bhutanese crisis of the 90s and early 2000s, which led to a significant Bhutanese community in Akron. (Neema himself settled in Akron in 2013 and became a U.S. citizen in 2019.)

Three Countries, One Mother tells a story that spans multiple generations and countries, as Neema shares his own cultural and spiritual background, paying special respect to mothers and women.

The play runs at the Balch Street Theater in downtown Akron Thursdays, Fridays, Saturday and Monday @ 8 pm and Sundays @ 3pm, through Sunday August 14.

It’s choose-what-you-pay , with a $20 suggested donation. For tickets, go here.
