Explore the History of Cleveland’s Grand Department Stores on Walking Tour

Wed 6/29 @ 6-7:30PM

Once upon a time, Cleveland’s downtown — like the downtowns of most major cities — was packed with luxurious emporiums known as department stores. They grew out of small general stores in the 19th century as the U.S. became progressively more urban and more goods were purchased that made at home.

These stores featured an array of departments — hence the name — so you could shop for almost any need. Clothing, furniture, linens, cookware, books, records, photography gear, toys — you name it. And most had a unique restaurant, fondly remembered by old patrons, where people (mostly women) could take a lunch break before resuming their shopping.

Many still remember those stores — Higbee’s (now Jack Casino), May Company (being turned into apartments), Halle’s (apartments, hotel and offices) and many smaller ones. Learn all about them on a Take a Hike walking tour of Cleveland’s Grand Department Stores.”

It starts at the Arcade at 401 Euclid Avenue. It’s fee but registration is requested. Go here. It’s one of many tours and talks being offered as part of Cleveland History Days, running through Sunday July 3.
