Sat 4/30
There’s never a bad time to stop in one of northeast Ohio’s independent bookstores, but Saturday April 30 — Independent Bookstore Day — is an especially good time to do so, just to let them know you support them. And you do have some books on your list you meant to buy, right? Local stores need your business more than Amazon! Jeff Bezos has enough money.
And many area bookstores are having special events, authors in store and giveaways.
For instance, Visible Voice Books in Tremont is hosting two Ohio author, Kate Norris and Jamie Lyn Smith, who met as grad students in the MFA writing program at The Ohio State University. Both have just published their debut books, Norris a young adult sci-fi historical novel called When You and I Collide, Smith’s a short story collection called Township. Lakewood resident Barbara Karkiris moderates the discussion at 7pm, which is free and open to all. Refreshments are available for purchase.
Mac’s Backs in Coventry Village is celebrating the day from 11am-8pm with photographer Joan Lederer debuting a photo exhibit and signing copies of her book Joy in the Time of COVID from 1-2pm. They’ll be raffling books, merch and two tickets to see Nei lGaiman at Cleveland Play House on May 17. If the weather cooperates, they’ll have music outside the store.
Appletree Books in Cleveland Heights will feature “Mimosas with Michael” served by Michael Wells in the morning. Later in the day, they’ll be serving cake from Archie’s Hough Bakery. Eric Silverman will be selling his Cleveland notecards from 11am-1pm; Jacob Joseph will sign copies of his book Abandoned Ohio: Rustbelt Derelicts from noon-1:30pm; and author Tim Harnett will sign his book No Beard or Bowtie Required: Cocktails for the Craft-Curious from 2-3pm.
Loganberry Books on Larchmere is promising we’ll have special Independent Bookstore Day merchandise, giveaways, raffles, and more all day.
