CPT Production Tells Story of Cleveland Woman Who Retraced the Underground Railroad

Thu 4/21-Sat 5/14

In 2002, retired Cleveland social worker Joan Southgate, a Case Western Reserve alum (’54), decided to undertake an incredible journey: walking 519 miles across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Canada to retrace the path to freedom followed by escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. Her 2004 book, In Their Path: A Grandmother’s 519 Underground Railroad Walk, told the story.

Now Cleveland-based actress/director/playwright Nina Domingue is retelling the story in a different form: the stage production The Absolutely Amazing and True Adventures of Ms. Joan Evelyn Southgate, which opens at Cleveland Public Theatre this week. Domingue wrote and performs the work, which Nathan Henry directs, to make the story come alive onstage.

The show runs Thursdays-Saturdays @ 7:30Pm and Sunday @ 3pm through Saturday May 14. Come on Friday for free drinks and a meet-and-greet with the artists following the show. All tickets are “choose what you pay,” regardless of how you buy them. Buy tickets at cptonline.org or call the box office at 216.631.2727 ext. 501
