Mercury Summer Theatre closed its 2021 summer season with a staged concert version of an old theatrical chestnut: 1937’s Me & My Girl.
While it’s been revived several times and revised, its old-fashioned roots are clear in the story of a lowborn Cockney lad revealed to be the missing heir to a title. But if he takes his place, what will become of his Cockney sweetheart? Will the upper-crust family accept her or will they have to part, heartbroken? It’s all rendered in cheerful songs such as “The Lambeth Walk,” “The Sun Has Got His Hat On” and “Leaning on a Lamp Post.”
