Neglected Composers Unearthed for Heights Arts Concert

Sun 4/25 @ 3PM

Heights Arts’ Close Encounters series offers classical music performed by some of the area’s best musicians, including members of the Cleveland Orchestra.

For its 15th series, which is winding up this week, it is, of course, not playing live but rather live streaming from the BOP STOP. And it’s focusing on “Unfairly Neglected Masters,” minority composers, women and others who for whatever reason slipped into the sands of time without much recognition.

This week’s concert with feature pianist Patti Wolf, who will be coming from her home in Austin, Texas, to perform with Cleveland Orchestra members, violinist Isabel Trautwein and cellist Tanya Ell Woolfrey.  They’ll play a piano trio by late 19th century Russian romantic Anton Arensky, who was influenced by Tchaikovsky, while Wolf performs solo piano works by the Fanny Mendelssohn. Like many women of the era, she was overshadowed by a close male relative — in this case her brother Felix, to the point where some of her compositions were attributed to him.
