CMNH Celebrates Its Famous Sled Dog Balto

Tue 3/9-Wed 3/31

One of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s longtime favorite attractions with its visitors is Balto, the Siberian Husky sled dog, whose story will certainly resonate even more with visitors after this past year. In 1925, he led a team of sled dogs carrying diphtheria antitoxin to its final destination in Nome during an outbreak that year. Balto lived out his long life at the Cleveland Zoo and after his death, his taxidermied body went on display at CMNH, where it remains to tell the story about combating disease.

This month, the anniversary of his death in 1933, CMNH is celebrating Balton with a series of virtual events, culminating with Balto’s Birthday Bash Giving Day on March 31 to raise money for its wildlife enrichment programs at its Perkins Wildlife Center.

Join them for family trivia night on Tuesday March 9 @ 6:30pm sponsored by the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Cleveland. Brush up on your canine knowledge! On Thursday March 11 @ 7-8pm, the museum’s education team will offer Balto@Bedtime.

Then, on Wednesday March 24 @ 6:30pm, a panel of experts from Alaska’s Iditarod Trail Race Headquarters and Museum will share information about the dogs of the Iditarod Trail, followed on Friday March 26 @ 7-8:30pm by a program called “Running Under Dancing Lights: A Trail Veterinarian’s Mission to Care for the Dogs of the Iditarod,” presented by Iditarod Trail veterinarian Dr. Lee Morgan. Dr. Morgan and the museum staff will be back on Saturday March 27 @ 11-11:45am with “Mush! Training Canines on the Trail.”

Every Saturday in March, weather permitting, the museum’s wildlife staff will host coyote demonstrations @ 2pm live at the Perkins Wildlife Center. No, these canines won’t be pulling sleds; you’ll have to stop by to see what they can do.
