New Framed Gallery Show Celebrates Black Men and Fathers

Fri 12/4 @ 7-9PM

Black fathers get a bad rap. We’ve been hearing for decades about “fatherless” children and how the lack of a two-parent home — and the irresponsibility of black men — causes a whole range of pathologies including crime, joblessness and drug addiction.

Stacey Bartels, who owns Framed Gallery on Waterloo, devoted to work by African-American artists from across the country, is not having it. Her new show, Roots to Love: Honoring Black Men and Fathers, pushes back on those degrading stereotypes and shows Black men at their best.

She shares, “For centuries, Black men have been the pillar of strength, courage, vision while elevating a race, culture and society. Black men deserve their due. With the turbulence that exists across the county and world today, this is the time to extend reflections and positivity toward Black men and fathers in the community for their good deeds to allow the darkness that prevails to become overshadowed by the radiance of light.”

The show will open with a reception on Friday December 4 @ 6-9pm, during a scaled-down Walk All Over Waterloo. It will be viewable at the gallery Wednesday through Saturday @ 1-5pm and also online at framedgallery.net and artsy.net through February 6.
