Mon 9/9 @ 9PM-1AM
Honestly, we don’t know who those people are who enjoy torturing themselves by watching the TV series based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Set approximately 20 years in the future, it depicts a society in which women have been stripped of their rights and reduced to reproductive chattel. In light of the policy directions of the last decade, this is no longer a ruminative, cautionary exercise in projection. But this book has become an even bigger cultural force than it was on release.
Now Atwood has written a follow-up — good grief, Margaret, isn’t reality a good enough follow-up for you? — called The Testaments, due to be released Tue 9/10. As with the Harry Potter books, whose release was also pop culture event, bookstores are holding midnight release parties for those who want to know “what came next” and haven’t read the headlines.
Come on down to Mac’s Backs in Coventry Village for one such release party. Starting at 9pm they’ll be streaming episodes of the TV show, and there will be snacks and beverages to keep you going until the book officially goes on sale at midnight. Go to their website to pre-order a copy, and you’ll be entered in a drawing for a signed paperback copy of The Handmaid’s Tale. A portion of the sales will go to Planned Parenthood, appropriately.
