CityMusic Cleveland calls its next series of concerts “Hidden Gems.” Those “gems” include lesser-known works by well-known composers: Camille Saint-Saëns’ youthful Symphony in A minor, and his Cello Concerto No. 1 and Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galanta, based on Gypsy folk music from his native country.

It also includes Overture in C major by pianist/composer Fanny Mendelssohn, whose brother was Felix. Like all women of the 19th century, she lacked the same opportunities and outlets available to him; the piece was composed for a family concert.

Israeli-American cellist Amit Peled is the soloist in the concerto, and Cleveland Institute of Music alumna Mélisse Brunet conducts. Both are making their Cleveland debuts with this program.

CityMusic Cleveland performs at St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills on Wednesday; at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood on Thursday; at Lakewood Congregational Church on Friday; at Slavic Village’s Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus on Saturday; and at St. Jerome Church in Collinwood on Sunday.

As always, all CityMusic Cleveland concerts are free.
