Philadelphia’s Donna Oblongata says that her work “occupies a unique space between social practice, performance art, pageantry, and American musical theater.” She continues, “I’m interested in creating ecstatic, spectacular performance (often with untrained performers) that celebrates our individual creativity and our power when working collectively.”
Further describing her work as “high magic but low tech,” she draws on recycled found materials for her props and costumes. She’s performed and led workshops across the country, both in traditional theaters and non-traditional spaces.
When she comes to Cleveland to perform her new piece All 100 Fires, she’ll be performing at a space that falls somewhere on the continuum between the two, Maelstrom Collaborative Arts’ space in Gordon Square. With puppetry and a set constructed from salvaged materials, the one-woman show features Oblongata as a guerrilla commander whose recruits — the audience — are enlisted to participate in her takes on war, revolution — and explosives.
Tickets are $15.
