With northeast Ohio a critical link in the Underground Railroad, through which slaves escaped to freedom in the pre-Civil War era, there are many Underground Railroad-related landmarks in this area.
These help raise the awareness of that time period and the plight of escaping slaves as do programs like Hale Farm & Village’s interactive “A Fugitive’s Path: Escape on the Underground Railroad.” In it, participants get a tiny taste of what it was like to flee, traveling after dark from safe house to safe house, while learning about race relations in northeast Ohio and the role it played in the abolitionist movement.
Tours depart every 20 minutes starting at 5:40pm. Cost is $20 per person, $15 for Western Reserve Historical Society members, $12 for students. Reservations are required; go here or call 330-666-3711 X 1720. The tour is suitable for all from grades 4 to adults. There are outdoor elements so dress warmly.
