Japanese heavy metal band X Japan, formed in 1982, have had an eventful history. Beginning as a sort of equivalent of American hair metal, they also delved into speed, progressive and symphonic metal styles prior to their breakup in 1997. A decade later, they reunited, a stuttering reunion that culminated in a concert at Madison Square Garden in October 2014.

Their history is littered with ex-members, dead members and a founding vocalist who allegedly left to join a cult, leading to the band’s breakup (He rejoined the reunion lineup). In the meantime, they managed to sell tens of millions of records and become a guiding star to many young Japanese bands.

The documentary film We Are X followed them as they prepare for the Madison Square Garden concert, diving into their obstacle-strewn past. It’s screening as part of the Capitol Theatre’s Tuesday night documentary series. Tickets are $9.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and children, $8.50 for students.
