The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve was started 20 years ago by the late sculptor David Douglas and eight other northeast Ohio artists, concerned about preserving their artistic legacy after their deaths. Since then, many other artists’ work has entered the collection as well.
The current show at the archives, the 20th Anniversary Founders’ Exhibition, features the work of those original nine. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration, Akron filmmaker Ted Sikora and Cleveland photographer Chuck Mintz created 11 short documentaries, each about four minutes long, on the lives of three of the original artists and eight others. They are described as “detailing their personal aesthetic, approach to art creation, influences of teachers and mentors, exhibition history, and relationships with other notable area artists.”
The Oral Histories Documentary Film Project will be screened at the AAWR. It’s free, but they’d appreciate registration so they know how many people to expect.
