A couple of years ago, filmmaker Nick Cavalier became intrigued by the work of Cleveland-based artist Derek Hess. He got the urge to know the story behind Hess’ tension-filled work, which first appeared on concert films and flyers and later in his fine art, with images that have become popular on T-shirts and tattoos.

As he learned about the demons Hess overcame to become a successful artist, his film grew into an hour-and-a-half documentary feature titled Forced Perspective: The Story of Artist Derek Hess. It was screened at numerous film festivals last year and it’s now ready for its official release.

You can see it at Cleveland State’s Main Classroom Auditorium, with a reception at 6pm, the screening at 7pm and a discussion afterward with Hess and Cavalier. It’s part of CSU radio station WCSB 89.3FM’s 40th anniversary.
