The Cleveland Orchestra is back in severance Hall and music director Franz Welser- Möst is back on the podium, as the orchestra opens its 98th season.
At the top of the program is Richard Strauss’ 1915 An Alpine Symphony, inspired by his love of the outdoors and the Alps. Not a traditional symphony as much as an extended tone poem, it features 22 segments that flow together rather than separate movements with breaks, describing sonically a day in the mountains. The grandiose work requires 125 musicians.
The program will open with Mozart’s final symphony, No. 41 (“Jupiter”), written in 1788.
Tickets are $29-$149.
