Hal Walker, Hey Mavis Headline Concert for Kent Unitarian-Universalist Church @KentStage

HeyMavis2015

Sun 9/27 @ 7PM

Sometimes, given the spotlight hogging of people like Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who went to jail rather than issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, that the religious right is in control of the spiritual field. But then you hear about something like the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent launching a capital campaign because they are growing so quickly.

“We need more space — A larger social hall to host events. Bigger spaces for our bursting religious education program. A larger sanctuary space to hold all who need our healing message,” they write on their website. They hope to raise as much as $1,500,000 in phases in order to spread their message of inclusiveness, equality, peace, racial and social justice, environmental stewardship and marrying whoever the hell you want.

“We embrace people of all races, ethnicities, ages, creeds, sexual orientations, and abilities,” they say.

They’ll be kicking off the campaign with a concert at the Kent Stage — and of course, the liberals have all the good music. The event will feature local folksinger Hal Walker who’s known for performing family-oriented concerts using a variety of homemade and traditional instruments, which he loves to teach about. It’s headlined by Hey Mavis, fronted by the husband-and-wife team of violinist Ed Caner and his banjo- and guitar-playing, singing, songwriting wife Laurie. They group released their latest album What I Did earlier this year, continuing to be one of the area’s most engaging purveyors of Americana, with an unparalleled ability to sound homespun an sophisticated at the same time.

Tickets are $20-$40 and we’re sure they would gladly accept more.
