If you have not been to the Night Market in AsiaTown, held on the last Friday of each month, don’t miss the final one this week. Launched in June, they’ve proved to be the breakout events of summer 2015, growing in size each month.
The markets take place on a block-long stretch of Rockwell Avenue off E. 21st, which is packed tight with local craftspeople, artists and designers offering handmade wares, vendors selling vintage goods and local restaurants, many from the neighborhood, dishing up primarily Asian food, but plenty of other varieties as well. A parking lot adjoining the street has a huge dining area, more vendors and an entertainment stage where international-flavored DJs, musicians and dancers perform. And there’s a huge beer garden spilling over onto E. 21st Street.
As it gets dark, the atmosphere gets more mysterious and intriguing. Strings of mini-lights hang over the street and trees with colored leaves of light glow in the darkness. Costumed street performers appear suddenly in the midst of the crowd like mystic visions. The OCA Cleveland Dragon Dance Team (pictured) will be returning after bringing their Chinese cultural flair to the August market.
The event is family-oriented and dog-friendly. And it’s free. Don’t miss it and have to wait until next year.
