The Jewish nonprofit group Workmen’s Circle was founded in 1900 in the wake of a wave of Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe to preserve and promote Jewish culture and values. That meant that it fought for labor rights and social and economic justice, among other things.
Today, the Cleveland branch of the organization, founded just a few years after the national group in 1904, presents cultural, educational and arts programming. One of its big annual events is its Workmen’s Circle Concert, taking place at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater. This year, its 37th, it will feature sets by busy local klezmer ensemble Yiddishe Cup (pictured), who enhance the traditional eastern European folk music with humor and vocals by soul singer Tamar Gray; the Steven Greenman & Mark Freiman Duo, featuring violinist Greenman and pianist Freiman, and the Lori Cahan-Simon Ensemble, spotlighting her deep knowledge of Yiddish song.
The concert is free.
