The Psychedelic Furs Bring That ’80s Heartbreak Beat @HOBCleveland

Psychedelic Furs

Wed 1/7 @ 8PM

In many ways, England’s Psychedelic Furs embodied the best of the post-punk ’80s. Neither gimmicky and poppy like some of their peers playing to early MTV crowd, or sneeringly noisy to maintain too-self conscious “cred,” the band’s music was both alluringly moody and sensuously melody.

Over in this country, the band is probably best known for providing the title song to the John Hughes’ film Pretty in Pink, a quintessential piece of ’80s pop culture. But the seven albums they released between 1980 and 1991 are packed with gems that both evoke their era and transcend it. They found widespread acceptance at college radio, then in its most influential phase.

The current lineup still features founding vocalist Richard Butler, whose dark croon gave their sound its flavor, and his brother, bassist Tim Butler. It also includes drummer Paul Garisto and sax player Mars Williams from the band’s late ’80s/early ’90s lineup, along with guitarist Rich Good and keyboard player Amanda Kramer.

They’ll be at the House of Blues. Tickets are $23 in advance, $25 at the door.
