Like many of Richard Wagner’s operas Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is long—very long (over four hours.) Unlike many of his operas, it’s entertaining and, if well, performed the time flies. You won’t find ponderous and obscure Nordic mythology in this one. The plot involves a young knight trying to win the hand of a woman by prevailing in a singing competition.
Die Meistersinger is next up for the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD series, screening at many local movie theaters. Johan Botha (pictured) sings the knight, Annette Dasch sings the role of his beloved, and Michael Volle sings the pivotal role of the “master singer” cobbler Hans Sachs.
The opera screens live on Saturday and in an encore performance the following Wednesday. Tickets are $23. Go here for a list of locations and to purchase tickets.
