REVIEW: ‘Young Frankenstein’ is Edgy & Outrageous @BeckCenter

By Elena Mulready

From initially sitting down and glancing at the set already on stage, I could tell Young Frankenstein was going to make me laugh. The over-exaggerated city scape of Transylvania paved the way to an entire show brimming with one hilarious line right after another.

Directed by Scott Spence, this show follows the hilarious story of the last remaining Frankenstein (or is it pronounced FRAHN-ken-steen?) from his journey of innocent professor to monster-creator. Young Frankenstein has an edgy side with musical numbers such as “Please Don’t Touch Me” and “Roll in The Hay” that helped balanced out the silliness and outrageousness in the rest of the show.

The lead roles, played by Jamie Koeth, and Alex Smith, were both filled with inspiring energy and excitement. Their musical duet, “Together Again,” was a hit and had the whole audience laughing throughout the entire routine.

I had never seen the original Young Frankenstein movie and I didn’t really know what to expect from this show, but after the first musical number performed by the amazingly talented and energetic ensemble I knew I was going to love the rest of the show too.

The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein runs until August 17 on the Mackey Main Stage at the Beck Center for the Arts. This show is filled with stars performers and hilarious hit musical numbers and would be enjoyed by all mature audiences.
