When you’ve got a six-piece ensemble, and three of the members are named László, that’s a pretty good sign the group is Hungarian.
That’s the case with the Roby Lakatos Ensemble, performing at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium as part of its 2013-2014 Masters of the Violin series.
Gypsy violinist Lakatos plays a giddy collision of classical music, jazz, and Hungarian folk music born of his own gypsy roots. Gypsy music was in his bloodline, and he started performing when his age was in the single digits (he’s now 49). But he developed his natural gifts with stint at the Béla Bartók conservatory in Budapest and spent ten years based in Brussels, Belgium, a musical crossroads. And he’s also known as a very colorful performer, no matter what style or mix of styles he’s playing.
His group includes second violinist László Bóni, cimbalon player Jenő Lisztes, guitarist László Balogh, double bassist László ‘Csorosz’ Lisztes, and pianist Kálmán Cséki Jr.
Tickets are $33–$51.
