VIDEO: Karen Gahl-Mills of Cuyahoga Arts & Culture

Culture and tourism is the fourth largest industry in our region. But with the slow economy recently, one may wonder why more damage hasn’t been done to our region’s massive but fragile arts and cultural infrastructure. When the county electorate voted in 2006 on a cigarette tax to support the art, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture began funding cultural institutions, projects and individuals with about $16 million per year, a per capita rate that is higher than all but four states!

Listen in as Gahl-Mills takes time out of their Project Support II Review Panel taking place at Idea Center on PlayhouseSquare to discuss the importance of investing in arts & culture in our community. She discusses with Cool Cleveland the rigorous process by which not only our well-known museums and attractions receive support, but also hundreds of smaller non-arts groups that exhibit strong public benefit are able to apply to this importance resource to help enrich the lives of Cuyahoga residents.
