Jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin has had a busy and productive career since graduating from The Ohio State University in the ’70s. She moved to New York in 1982 to try her hand at making a marking on the jazz scene. She certainly did that, having the opportunity to perform with jazz legends like Toots Thielemans, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Jazz Crusaders.

She’s especially known for her skillful interpretations of Billie Holiday tunes, which she’s performed both as part of a one-woman show channeling Holiday in her own voice, and in her concert and nightclub sets. Now she’s bringing that show back home under the auspices of Tri-C JazzFest. She’ll perform her tribute to the legendary singer whose distinctive phrasing and ability to imbue a song with powerful emotions drawn from her own hard-luck life overcame lack of a strong vocal instrument at Oliver Institutional Baptist Church.

It’s free.
