The Mechanic Street Concerts, that irregular series of house concerts in a living room in Ohio City, is hosting a mandolin feast they’re calling the North Coast Mandolin Summit.
It starts in the afternoon from 1:30-6pm with workshops hosted by mandolin players Matt Flinner and Sims Delaney-Potthoff for those who want to dig deep into the instrument’s potentia, with two workshops schedules in each of three time slots.
For those who just want to enjoy it, Flinner and Delaney-Potthoff’s mandolin-focused bands, the Matt Flinner Trio and Harmonious Wail, will perform in the evening. Flinner’s trio uses mandolin, guitar and upright bass to concoct a jazzy bluegrass sound. Harmonious Wail is part of the burgeoning neo-gypsy jazz scene, with Delaney-Pottthoff’s mandolin sparring with his wife Maggie Delaney-Potthoff’s vocals over the rock-solid foundation of Jeffo Weiss’s bass.
And on Sunday morning, there’ll be a jam session with members of Harmonious Wail available for private lessons.
The afternoon of workshops is $70; workshops and concert are $85. The concert alone is $20 all of which goes to the artists.
