A Ceremony of Carols Returns @TrinityCleve Brownbag Concerts

Ceremony

Wed 12/10 @ noon

The sopranos and altos of the Trinity Cathedral Choir and harpist Jody Guinn, a faculty member at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and a member of the Akron Symphony, will reprise their performance of Benjamin Britten’s lovely Christmas song cycle A Ceremony of Carols.

The eleven-song suite is based on medieval carols in archaic English with flourishes of Latin, written for female voices (or children) and harp. Opening and closing with the plainchant-style “Hodie Christus Natus Est,” it wends its way through tunes like the bright “Wolcom Yole!,” the exultant “Deo Gracias,” the tender “Balulalow,” and loving tributes to Christ’s mother, “There Is No Rose” and “As Dew in Aprille.”

Britten wrote the piece under harrowing circumstances for such a gentle and uplifting piece of music. The British composer had been living in the U.S. but after World War II escalated, he felt the urge to return home to England. In the spring of 1942, he crossed the Atlantic by ship and wrote A Ceremony of Carols on his journey.

A Ceremony of Carols will be performed at Trinity Cathedral as part of its weekly Brownbag concert series. Come on over during your lunch hour and bring your lunch, or buy one at the cathedral for $5. The concert is free.
