You won’t get to hear another musician quite like Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ. Playing traditional Vietnamese instruments — a zither-like instrument similar to the koto and single-stringed guitar among others — she draws on various Vietnamese folk styles but isn’t slavishly wedded to their traditional forms. She’s even reinterpreted music by 20th century composer Erik Satie filtered through her own cultural and musical sensibility.
Studying since the age of four, she has won awards and taught music in her native country and performed with traditional music groups in her native Hanoi. She’s now based in the San Francisco bay area and in the last few years, she’s been bringing her music to western audiences, composing soundtracks, performing with the Kronos Quartet, teaching and touring.
Vân-Ánh will perform at the Transformer Station. Tickets are $20 or $18 for Cleveland Museum of Art members.
