Local Musicians Pay Tribute to Art Blakey at the Bop Stop

Fri 10/24 @ 7:30PM

Local jazz trumpeter and educator Mark Russo has played around town with a variety of ensembles including the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. He’s also got his own project called Buhaina’s Delight: the Music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. It pays tribute to the legendary drummer, composer and bandleader whose ensemble, formed in the mid ’50 s and lasting until his death in 1990, spawned other jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, and Freddie Hubbard. Needless to say Blakey left a huge musical legacy for Russo and the musicians he’s assembled for this project — who include sax players Brad Wagner and Bobby Selvaggio, trombonist Adam Machaskee, pianist Joe Leaman, bassist Alan Gleghorn, and drummer Ricky Exton — a lot of music to play around with.

They’ll be taking it out for another spin at the Bop Stop, where they’ll play two sets. Tickets are $10.
